Two-step authentication: double protection online

We are sure that you are already protecting your personal details online effectively with a long password. But what if it gets hacked? You're better to play it safe and opt for even more security. With two-step authentication (also known as authentication in two steps or two-factor authentication) you will have a more secure solution than just a single password and your data will be better protected. It is very simple, and what's more it's free!

How does two-step authentication work?

Log in to your profile or e-mail account with two security steps.

Enter your password first as usual. When you log in for the first time on an unknown device, you will receive an sms or voice message with a code. You then continue the login process with that code. This confirms your identity and prevents a hacker from gaining access to your details from an unknown computer. You only need to enter a code the first time you use a device or computer.

How do you turn on two-step authentication?

You set two-step authentication separately for every online account, e.g. for your e-mail (gmail), social media profiles (Facebook, Twitter etc.) or online storage (Apple iCloud, Dropbox etc.).

Google, for example, is one of the leaders in two-step authentication. You can activate the authentication in two steps via 'Settings'. It is quick and easy.

  • First, your telephone number is checked.
  • You can then add a backup telephone (e.g. that of a family member) in case you lose your telephone, or select a different backup method.
  • You can add 'trusted devices' e.g. your own computer, tablet or smartphone). The second security step is then automatically skipped for those devices.

Two-step authentication is carried out in more or less the same way for other accounts (e.g. social media accounts). You will find the procedures for iCloud, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. easily with Google or any other search engine.

Two-step authentication is not turned on by default. You have to do it yourself for each profile. However, we advise you to use it as much as possible, and definitely for e-mail accounts or online storage. It is the best way to protect your personal information. It is a more secure option than only one password. Do it today. It is easy and it is free!
